Department of Labor will celebrate benefits of Registered Apprenticeships as valuable pathway to good jobs during first Youth Apprenticeship Week

Department of Labor will celebrate benefits of Registered Apprenticeships as valuable pathway to good jobs during first Youth Apprenticeship Week WASHINGTON – The Department of Labor today announced that the nation will celebrate the benefits of Registered Apprenticeships and the opportunities they create for youth and young adults with 320 special events and more than 70 proclamations scheduled across the U.S. to mark the first annual Youth Apprenticeship Week from May 5-11. Built on the success of National Apprenticeship Week, Youth Apprenticeship Week will give employers, unions, educators, state agencies, workforce partners, community-based organizations and other Registered Apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs and successes in youth apprenticeships. The annual commemoration also offers youth apprentices a platform on which they can share their apprenticeship experiences and educate the public about the benefits of local youth apprenticeship programs.

US Department of Labor recovers $33K in back wages for five workers after investigation revealed Apex company violated federal wage laws

US Department of Labor recovers $33K in back wages for five workers after investigation revealed Apex company violated federal wage laws APEX, NC – The U.S. Department of Labor has recovered $33,230 in back wages for five employees working on a federally funded construction project in Fayetteville. Investigators found the employer failed to pay workers all wages earned as required by the Davis Bacon Act. Investigators with the department’s Wage and Hour Division found Apex Plumbing and Heating Inc. – operating as APH – violated federal law when the employer paid employees the prevailing wage for sheet metal workers even though they performed plumbers’ work. The employer paid less than the prevailing wage and benefits than the workers would have earned if paid correctly. In addition, APH failed to comply with Executive Order 13706, Paid Sick Leave for Federal Contractors, by failing to allow employees to accrue and use paid sick leave. Record keeping violations under the Fair Labor Sta

US Department of Labor cites 4 contractors after multiple inspections find workers at risk of falls, a leading cause of death, injury in construction

US Department of Labor cites 4 contractors after multiple inspections find workers at risk of falls, a leading cause of death, injury in construction EASTAMPTON, NJ – While falls continue to be the leading cause of death and serious injury in the construction industry, federal workplace safety inspectors too often find employers willing to ignore required safety protections and put the safety of their workers at risk. On May 24, inspectors with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration observed roofing workers at Venue Estates at Smithville Green, a senior community housing development under construction in Eastampton, exposed to falls and other dangerous safety hazards. As part of the agency’s Regional Emphasis Program for fall hazards in construction, OSHA initiated an inspection at the Burlington County site and, under the same program, conducted seven additional inspections there in June, July and August.
