Department of Labor will celebrate benefits of Registered Apprenticeships as valuable pathway to good jobs during first Youth Apprenticeship Week WASHINGTON – The Department of Labor today announced that the nation will celebrate the benefits of Registered Apprenticeships and the opportunities they create for youth and young adults with 320 special events and more than 70 proclamations scheduled across the U.S. to mark the first annual Youth Apprenticeship Week from May 5-11. Built on the success of National Apprenticeship Week, Youth Apprenticeship Week will give employers, unions, educators, state agencies, workforce partners, community-based organizations and other Registered Apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs and successes in youth apprenticeships. The annual commemoration also offers youth apprentices a platform on which they can share their apprenticeship experiences and educate the public about the benefits of local youth apprenticeship programs.

US Department of Labor cites Long Island contractor for 9 willful safety violations following employee’s fatal fall NEW YORK – A federal investigation into a fatal workplace injury on Aug. 19, 2021, at a Town of Oyster Bay municipal building has found a Setauket roofing contractor failed to provide necessary safeguards to protect employees against falls. After an employee of DME Construction Associates Inc. died after falling 18 feet through an unprotected skylight, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration conducted an inspection. The agency found that, in addition to the unprotected skylight, the employer exposed workers to falls of up to 22 feet from other unguarded roof openings and roof edges, and failed to provide employees with any personal fall protection equipment. Federal judge affirms US Department of Labor citations, penalties against Bergen County construction contractor for willfully exposing workers to falls PALISADES PARK, NJ – An administrative law judge with the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission affirmed willful, repeat and serious citations issued by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration to Framing Specialist Inc., a Palisades Park construction contractor, who exposed workers to fall and safety hazards at two Bergen County work sites. The judge ordered the company to pay $45,590 in penalties for all violations. In December 2019, OSHA inspected Framing Specialist Inc. and subsequently issued citations to the company for not providing fall protection, allowing unsafe ladder use, and failing to ensure eye protection at a Cliffside Park worksite. Inspectors identified one repeat and three serious violations with $15,904 in proposed penalties there. A second OSHA inspection in February 2
