US Department of Labor investigation finds Birmingham construction company willfully exposed workers to trench collapse at Bessemer worksite BIRMINGHAM – A U.S. Department of Labor investigation has found numerous safety hazards at a civil construction employer’s worksite following a trench collapse in Jefferson County. The department’sOccupational Safety and Health Administration investigators found CB&A Construction LLC workers removed and installed drain pipes for Jefferson County under a suspended load, without hard hats, and at the edge of an excavation that lacked protective restraints.OSHA cited CB&A Construction with a willful violation and proposed $170,145 in penalties.CB&A Construction LLC has 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. US Department of Labor, Drywall and Acoustical Tile Contractors Association renew alliance to promote workplace safety
Participants:      U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational                                   Safety and Health Administration                                   Drywall and Acoustical Tile Contractors                                     Association Alliance description:  OSHA’s Dallas and Fort Worth Area offices and the Drywall and Acoustical Tile Contractors Association have renewed a 2-year alliance to educate employers and employees on construction hazards. Both parties will continue their efforts to provide information, guidance and training resources to construction industry employers, that will help protect the health and safety of workers. First signed in 2017, the alliance also focuses on helping employers understand the rights of workers and the responsibilities of employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Background:  OSHA’s Alliance Program works with groups committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. These groups include unions, consulates, trade or professional organizations, businesses, faith- and community-based organizations and educational institutions. OSHA and the groups work together to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, share information with workers and employers and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities.
